SURRENDERED

Week Two — Surrendering My Desires and Secret Idols

Surrender Is Not Giving Up Your Dreams; It’s Trusting God Enough to Examine What Has Captured Your Heart.

The Heart of SURRENDERED

YES Changes Everything

Every woman has desires, dreams, aspirations, expectations, and personal goals that influence how she approaches life.

Some desires are healthy expressions of purpose, love, ambition, and the gifts God has placed within her. Other desires, even when they begin with good intentions, can gradually become sources of pressure, comparison, disappointment, or unhealthy attachment.

The desire to be married, financially secure, successful, respected, appreciated, or accepted is not inherently wrong. The opportunity for growth begins when we examine whether those desires are influencing our identity, directing our decisions, or determining our sense of fulfillment.

Surrender is not about abandoning everything you want. It is about developing the spiritual maturity to recognize when something you desire has become something you depend upon to feel complete.

Throughout Week Two, we will explore two areas of surrender:
SELF

Recognizing the aspirations, expectations, and emotional needs influencing my decisions.

GOD

Discovering whether my trust in God remains my anchor when my desires are delayed, challenged, or redirected.

Preparing My Heart for Surrender

Understanding My Desires

Scripture That Strengthens Your YES · Psalm 37:4 (KJV)
“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

God has created us with the capacity to desire meaningful things.

Healthy desires can inspire personal growth, but surrender helps me recognize when my desire for something has become unhealthy.

Questions That Anchor Your Resolve

Surrender Perspective: You do not have to stop wanting meaningful things to walk in surrender. You can pursue your dreams with passion while allowing God’s wisdom to shape your expectations and decisions.
Lady C’s Wisdom Perspective

“God is not asking you to stop dreaming. He’s inviting you to trust Him enough that your dreams don’t become the SOURCE of your identity, your peace, or your worth.”

Lady C’s Wisdom Perspective

“There’s nothing wrong with wanting more out of life. The question is whether your desire is helping you become more of who God created you to be or stalling you from appreciating who you already are.”

My Personal Surrender Assessment

A private starting-point assessment, not a test of spirituality or personal worth.

Every woman has desires that influence her decisions and expectations. The purpose of this assessment is to recognize healthy motivations, identify opportunities for greater freedom, and develop a more intentional relationship with God.

My Starting Point: For each statement, select the response that best reflects your current experience.

SELF

I can identify the difference between a healthy personal desire and an expectation that is creating unnecessary pressure.

I recognize when comparison, status, or the need for approval influences my ambitions.

I can appreciate my current season of life while continuing to pursue meaningful goals.

GOD

I am learning to trust God’s wisdom when my expectations are not immediately fulfilled.

I can honestly acknowledge when something I desire has become more important to me than my spiritual priorities.

I am willing to reconsider a goal or expectation when biblical wisdom challenges my motivations.

SELF

Surrendering What I Desire

Scripture That Strengthens Your YES · Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Foundational Thought: My desires influence my decisions, expectations, and emotional responses. Understanding what motivates me allows me to pursue meaningful goals with greater wisdom and freedom.

A. Recognizing When Healthy Desires Become Unhealthy Obsessions

These desires are not automatically unhealthy. However, when something becomes the primary source of your confidence, security, or emotional stability, it may be influencing your life more than you realize.

A woman can become so focused on getting married that she overlooks the importance of emotional health and personal development. A woman may become so determined to achieve financial success that she sacrifices rest, relationships, and personal well-being. Another may become consumed with how others perceive her, continually adjusting her choices to maintain an image of success.

Surrender invites us to recognize the difference between pursuing something worthwhile and becoming emotionally controlled by the pursuit.

Questions That Anchor Your Resolve

Potential Obstacles to Surrender

Comparison: Believing someone else’s progress means I am behind.Impatience: Feeling dissatisfied because my expectations have not been fulfilled.Fear of Missing Out: Making decisions because I believe opportunities are passing me by.Emotional Dependence: Allowing an outcome to determine my confidence or happiness.Social Pressure: Pursuing goals mostly because they are celebrated or expected by others.

Understanding What Makes My YES Difficult

Sometimes unhealthy attachments develop around very understandable emotional needs. A woman who has experienced rejection may place extraordinary importance on being chosen. A woman who grew up with financial instability may feel compelled to pursue wealth because money represents safety. A woman who has repeatedly felt overlooked may become intensely focused on recognition or achievement.

These patterns do not mean she is spiritually deficient. They may reflect experiences that shaped what she learned to associate with security, acceptance, or significance. Recognizing these connections allows her to approach surrender with compassion and greater understanding.

Surrender Perspective: You can appreciate the experiences that shaped your desires while allowing God to help you develop healthier ways of pursuing them.
Lady C’s Wisdom Perspective

“Sometimes what you’re chasing isn’t really what you want. It’s what you believe having it will make you feel. Before you pursue it any harder, ask yourself what you’re expecting it to give you.”

SELF

Surrendering Unbridled Ambition

Ambition can be an expression of stewardship, purpose, creativity, and personal responsibility.

God has given women the capacity to lead, build, influence, create, develop, and accomplish extraordinary things. The concern is not ambition itself. The concern develops when ambition becomes disconnected from wisdom, healthy priorities, or personal well-being.

A surrendered woman does not have to become less capable or less accomplished. She learns to pursue her aspirations without allowing them to consume her identity.

Questions That Anchor Your Resolve

Potential Obstacles to Surrender

PerfectionismComparisonFear of failurePressure to prove oneselfOverachievementDifficulty resting
Lady C’s Wisdom Perspective

“Never become so committed to proving what you can accomplish that you lose the ability to appreciate who you are. God can develop your influence without allowing achievement to become your identity.”

Confession of a Surrendered Woman

I am grateful for the desires, dreams, and aspirations God has placed within me. I pursue meaningful goals with wisdom, patience, and confidence through Jesus Christ. My value is not determined by my achievements, relationship status, appearance, or the approval of others. Jesus purchased me. I appreciate my current season while remaining open to the possibilities ahead. I am led by the Holy Spirit daily.

The YES Challenge — SELF

Identify one meaningful desire that has recently created emotional pressure. Write down why this desire matters to you, what you hope it will provide, and one healthy step you can take toward it without allowing it to control your peace.

GOD

Surrendering My Secret Idols

Scripture That Strengthens Your YES · Matthew 6:21 (KJV)
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Foundational Thought: The things I consistently prioritize, depend upon, and organize my life around can reveal what has become most important to my heart.

A. Recognizing the Things I May Want More Than God

A secret idol does not always appear as something obviously wrong. Sometimes it is something good that has gradually become too important. It may be the approval of others, a relationship, financial security, personal control, success, recognition, an ideal lifestyle, or the need to maintain a certain image.

These attachments may be difficult to recognize because they often develop gradually. A woman may sincerely love God while struggling to trust Him with something she deeply wants. She may value biblical wisdom while continuing to make certain decisions primarily out of fear, insecurity, or a desire for approval.

The invitation is not to question the sincerity of her faith. It is to create an opportunity for honest reflection about what has gained disproportionate influence over her heart.

A secret idol may be revealed by what we consistently fear losing, what we believe we cannot live meaningfully without, or what we repeatedly prioritize over our deeply held values. These patterns are invitations to reflection, not automatic proof of idolatry.

Questions That Anchor Your Resolve

Potential Obstacles to Surrender

Fear of disappointmentThe need for certaintyEmotional attachmentAvoidanceSelf-protectionDifficulty recognizing deeply established patterns

Understanding What Makes My YES Difficult

Sometimes what appears to be resistance to surrender is actually fear of experiencing another disappointment. A woman who has experienced abandonment may become deeply attached to relationships because companionship represents emotional security. A woman who has experienced instability may hold tightly to control because predictability helps her feel safe. A woman who has experienced repeated rejection may become dependent upon approval because being accepted has become closely connected to her self-worth.

These emotional patterns deserve thoughtful examination. Surrender should not become an invitation to criticize ourselves for needs that developed through difficult experiences. Instead, recognizing these patterns creates an opportunity to invite God’s wisdom into the ways we seek security, acceptance, and fulfillment.

Surrender Perspective: Discovering an unhealthy attachment is not a reason for condemnation. It is an opportunity to develop greater freedom, trust, and spiritual maturity.
Lady C’s Wisdom Perspective

“Sometimes the most difficult thing to surrender isn’t something bad. It’s something you’ve wanted for so long that you’ve started believing life cannot be meaningful without it. God wants your trust, not because your desires don’t matter, but because you matter more than anything you’re waiting to receive.”

GOD

Examining What Has Become More Important Than God’s Direction

Scripture That Strengthens Your YES · Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Spiritual growth invites us to examine the relationship between our priorities and our faith.

It is possible to pursue goals while gradually allowing them to influence decisions more than the biblical principles we value. For example, the desire to maintain a relationship may lead a woman to ignore serious concerns about respect or compatibility. The desire to appear successful may lead another woman to make financial decisions that create unnecessary pressure. The desire for recognition may cause someone to continually compare herself with others.

Surrender encourages us to examine these patterns before they become deeply established. The question is not simply, “What do I want?” It is also, “What is this desire encouraging me to become?”

Questions That Anchor Your Resolve

Potential Obstacles to Surrender

Fear of losing opportunitiesSelective reasoningEmotional dependenceImpatienceThe belief that personal happiness depends upon a specific outcome

Understanding What Makes My YES Difficult

Our minds naturally look for information that supports what we already hope to be true. When we become deeply invested in an outcome, it can become difficult to objectively consider alternative possibilities.

This does not automatically indicate an absence of faith. It reveals the importance of humility, discernment, wise counsel, and honest reflection. Spiritual maturity includes the willingness to examine our assumptions without immediately becoming defensive.

Surrender Perspective: Trusting God does not require abandoning your ability to think, question, or make responsible decisions. It invites you to approach your desires with greater wisdom and openness to His direction.
Lady C’s Wisdom Perspective

“A surrendered woman doesn’t have to pretend she doesn’t want what she wants. She simply becomes mature enough to say, ‘God, this matters to me, but I trust Your wisdom enough to examine whether it’s truly best for my life.’”

Confession of a Surrendered Woman

I have the courage to examine my heart with honesty and compassion. I will not allow fear, comparison, or unhealthy attachments to determine the direction of my life. The Lord directs my life. I welcome God’s wisdom into my desires, expectations, and decisions. My relationship with Him is more important than any single outcome, and I trust His direction with greater confidence.

The YES Challenge — GOD

Choose one meaningful desire and spend ten minutes in personal prayer and reflection on three days this week. Consider what you desire, why it matters, and how biblical wisdom might help you pursue it with greater peace and discernment.
